What a quitline does

Trained advisers help you set a quit date, plan for triggers, choose nicotine replacement or medicines, and call back during the first weeks. Many also offer text, chat or app support. Calls are confidential.

What research suggests helps

  • Behavioural support plus medicine. Studies find combining counselling with nicotine replacement or prescription medicines is linked to the highest quit rates.
  • Combination nicotine replacement. In trials, a patch plus a fast-acting form like gum or spray worked better than one alone. See patches vs gum vs tablets.
  • Set a date and track it. The quit smoking tracker keeps the money and health milestones in front of you.

If you drink heavily every day, don't stop suddenly without medical advice; alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call a crisis line or emergency services now.
