Quit alcohol: money, calories and recovery by drink

After a month without alcohol, liver fat and blood pressure can start to fall and sleep is usually better. Four pints of beer and two glasses of wine a week add up to about 3,300 kcal a month. Heavy daily drinkers should talk to a doctor before stopping.

How it works

For each drink type, 10K Count multiplies drinks per week by the local pour size, strength and price. Pure alcohol is ml × ABV × 0.789 g/ml, divided by your country's standard drink: 8 g in the UK, 14 g in the US, 20 g in Japan and 10 g elsewhere.

Common questions

What happens to your body when you stop drinking?

Sleep usually improves within a week. Within a month liver fat and blood pressure can begin to fall. Over 3 to 12 months energy and concentration improve, the liver can recover substantially, and the risk of several cancers starts to fall.

How many calories are in beer, wine and spirits?

A 330 ml beer at 5% has about 142 kcal, a 150 ml glass of wine about 128 kcal, a 44 ml shot of 40% spirit about 100 kcal and a 60 ml Indian peg of whisky about 140 kcal. Mixers and cocktails add more.

What is a standard drink?

It is a fixed amount of pure alcohol, and it differs by country: 8 g in the UK (one unit), 14 g in the US, 10 g in Australia and in WHO guidance, and about 20 g in Japan.

How long does it take the liver to recover from drinking?

Fatty liver from drinking can improve within 2 to 6 weeks of stopping. More serious damage takes longer and some scarring may not reverse, so get a check-up if you have been a heavy drinker.

Why do I get headaches after I stop drinking?

Headaches in the first days are a common withdrawal symptom, along with poor sleep and irritability. Drink water, eat regularly and rest. Seek medical help if headaches are severe or come with shaking, sweating, confusion or a racing heart.

What happens after a month without alcohol?

Many people sleep better, have more energy and see lower weight, blood pressure and liver fat after a month. Studies of people taking part in Dry January also report better concentration and mood.

Is it safe to stop drinking suddenly?

For most people, yes. People who drink heavily every day can get dangerous withdrawal, including seizures, if they stop abruptly. If you drink heavily, talk to a doctor first.
