| "Smoking relieves stress" | Nicotine relieves the irritability and anxiety caused by withdrawal from the last cigarette. Studies show people who quit end up with lower anxiety, depression and stress than people who keep smoking. |
| "It helps me stay slim" | Nicotine slightly suppresses appetite and raises metabolism. Average weight gain after quitting is a few kilograms, and the health gain from quitting far outweighs it. |
| "It helps me focus" | Nicotine can briefly sharpen attention, mostly by relieving withdrawal-related fog. Concentration usually returns to normal within weeks of quitting. |
| "Smokers get Parkinson's less" | Observational studies link smoking with lower Parkinson's risk, but the cause is unclear and the cancer, heart and lung risks make smoking a harmful trade. |
| "Nicotine itself is harmless" | Nicotine is highly addictive, raises heart rate and blood pressure, harms the developing brain in teenagers and is harmful in pregnancy. Most of smoking's deadly effects come from smoke, which is why licensed nicotine replacement is used to help people quit. |
What smoking actually does
- Causes cancers of the lung, mouth, throat, oesophagus, bladder, pancreas and more.
- Doubles to quadruples the risk of heart disease and stroke.
- Causes COPD and emphysema.
- Harms fertility and pregnancy.
- Shortens life by around 10 years on average for lifelong smokers.
Is chewing tobacco or vaping a safer option?
Smokeless tobacco, such as gutka, khaini or snuff, causes mouth and throat cancers and heart disease. Vaping exposes users to fewer toxins than smoking, but it isn't harmless and keeps people addicted to nicotine. Licensed nicotine replacement is the safest way to use nicotine while quitting.
The benefits that are real: quitting
Within weeks of quitting, breathing, circulation and energy improve. After a year, heart disease risk halves. See the full health timeline or start with the withdrawal tracker.
